Collision on Scheldt-Rhine Canal

On September 4, the 135 meter long self-propelled tanker barge Unigas III (MMSI: 269057042) and the 110 meter long, 2500 dwt self-propelled tanker barge Marten Deymann (IMO: 9468516) collided on the Scheldt-Rhine Canal near Rilland, Netherlands. The two vessels struck head on in the outer harbour of the Kreekrak locks.

Both vessels sustained hull damage. The Marten Deymann sustained a large hole in the bow while the Unigas III bow was partially crushed and holed. Both vessels proceed to moor on the south of the locks.

Two passengers on the Marten Deymann were injured and taken to hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. No reports of pollution released.

Photo: reporteris.roOn August 28, the 126 meter long, 7321 dwt cargo vessel Sundry (IMO: 9045651) collided with the 118 meter long, 7732 dwt tanker Mazu Xiao (IMO: 9503940) on the Danube-Sulina Canal in Romania.  The Sundry loaded with more than 6,200 tons of barley had suffered a power blackout after engine failure. The vessel attempted to do an emergency anchorage, but was unable to complete it before blocking the path of the passing Mazu Xiao loaded with 6620 tons of diesel fuel from Constanta to Izmail. The Mazu Xiao attempted to veer pass the Sundry but ended up scraping against the hull.

The Sundry sustained damage on the stern  starboard hull above the waterline. The Mazu Xiao sustained a large gash along its starboard hull. The Mazu Xiao proceeded to an anchorage off Tulcea, Romania for inspection. The Sundry remained moored at Sulina for inspection. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

On August 28, the 180 meter long, 34,467 dwt bulk carrier Obahan C (IMO: 9748253) collided with the 180 meter long, 42,904 dwt bulk carrier Nord Singapore (IMO: 9913535) on the Parana River near the 337 kilometer mark near Ramallo, Argentina. The Obahan C had departed from San Lorenzo bound for Cameroon with some 15,000 tons of soybeans when it approached the Nord Singapore was approaching upstream in ballast bound for San Lorenzo to load 31,000 tons of corn for Malaysia.  The two bulk carriers failed to signal and confirm a pass port to port and the Nord Singapore struck the Obahan C. The Obahan C had hull damage on its port side above the waterline and one of its lifeboat partially crushed. The Nord Singapore also sustained some hull damage.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Both vessels were detained and ordered to nearby anchorages off Ramallo. Argentine authorities have dispatched patrol vessels to inspect and damage and ensure navigation on the Paraná River is safe. Authorities have launched an investigation  into the incident. Reports do state there were pilots on board both vessels at the time of the collision.
