Kiel Canal Collision

The 108 meter long, 6175 dwt tanker Coral Lophelia collided with the 90 meter long, 4516 dwt cargo vessel Karmel in the Brunsbuettel lock, Kiel Canal, Germany. Both vessels were proceeding towards Kiel when they touched.  Both vessels sustained only slight damage and were able to proceed under their own power. Authorities detained both vessels in Kiel for surveys. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 30 meter long, 92 ton coastal tanker Sunway Maru collided with the 449 ton gravel carrier Daifuku Maru No. 8 off Umihotaru in Tokyo Bay, Japan. The Sunway Maru was loaded with lubricating oil  was struck by the Daifuku Maru No. 8 which was loaded with gravel. The Sunway Maru sustained significant hull damage and water ingress. The tanker quickly sank by the stern leaving only the forepeak still visible. The 3 crew on board the Sunway Maru were rescued. No reports of injuries on either vessel.  Reports state a large oil sheen several kilometers long was visible around the wreck. Authorities have dispatched pollution control vessels to the scene and have released chemical dispersants. The total amount of pollution released has not been disclosed.

The 20 meter long tug Phoenix sank at the Volkerak Lock in Willemstad, Netherlands. The Phoenix had collided with the tanker-barge Imke Deymann resulting in hull damage and water ingress on the Phoenix.  The tug  partially sank leaving only part of its wheelhouse above water. All five crew on the Phoenix were able to escape in time. No reports of injuries. The sunken tug blocked traffic at the lock and authorities placed  booms around the vessel to prevent possible pollution released.  The following day a crane was brought to the scene to raise the Phoenix.
