On July 13, the 85 meter long, 4071 dwt cargo vessel Wan Li 8 collided with the 97 meter long, 5287 dwt bulk carrier Heng Run in the East China Sea off Zhoushan, China. The Wan Li 8 was en route to Kaohsiung from Zhangjiagang with 3700 tons of steel when it struck the Heng Run as it was proceeding from Vietnam to South Korea with 5000 tonnes of ore. The Heng Run’s hull was ripped open and the water ingress quickly sank the vessel in just a few minutes.  Fourteen of the 15 crew on board the Heng Run was able to abandon ship.  One crewman swam to nearby Huangxing Island while 12 others were rescued by authorities.  One body was found in the water  while another was still reported as missing.

The 195 foot long towboat American Heritage collided with the towboat David G. Schert on the Mississippi River near Vacherie, Louisiana. After the collision five of the barges being pushed broke free. One barge capsized releasing its cargo of caustic soda solution into the river. Coast Guard reported that upto 23,672 gallons of the solution could have been released into the water.  No reports of injuries on either vessel.  Traffic was halted on that section of the Mississippi River, but was later reopened. The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Coburg

The 86 meter long self-propelled barge Coburg collided with the 48 meter long passenger ship Renate in the Gordnsdorf Lock on the Main-Danube Canal at Kelheim, Germany. The Cobug, loaded with 940 tonnes of fertilizer, struck the stern of the Renate. One of the 291 passengers on board the Renate was injured and taken to hospital in Kelheim for treatment. The Renate suffered some damage to its stern and  had several divers inspect the hull before it was allow to continue with its voyage. The Coburg had only slight damage and continued its voyage from Regensburg to Nuremberg. The water police has launched an investigation into the incident.
