On August 9, the 305 meter long, 81,145 dwt container ship YM Mobility (IMO: 9457737) sustained an explosion while berthed at Ningbo, China.  The YM Mobility was loading containers at the Beilun terminal when a reefer container with hazardous materials located in the bow of the YM Mobility exploded.  The explosion generated a shockwave that could be felt over a kilometer away wish reports of broken windows and some building damage to nearby building.  Multiple containers on board the YM Mobility were completely destroyed and scattered over the vessel and dock.

The YM Mobility sustained some damage, but no details to the extent of damage was been released.  No reports of injuries.

Authorities have stop port operations to carry out safety inspections and conduct clean-up operations. Authorities have stated there will be an investigation into the incident.

On July 25, the 105 meter long, 5419 dwt container ship Brothers Way (IMO: 8411621) became disabled while crossing the Bosporus off Anadolu Kavağı, Turkey.  The Brothers Way was en route to Tripoli from Novorossyisk when it suffered engine failure and power black out.  Authorities dispatched the tug Kurtarma to the scene. The tug took the Brothers Way under tow to an anchorage off Büyükdere.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

On May 22, the 118 meter long, 6850 dwt container ship Elisabeth caught fire on the Kiel Canal near Brunsbüttel, Germany. The Elisabeth was proceeding to Hamburg from Settin when a fire broke out in the vessel’s stack. Soot had accumulated and had ignited inside the funnel. The crew quickly responded and was able to contain the blaze until the local fire brigade arrived. The fire brigade was able to to extinguish the blaze. Reports state there was just minor damage to the stack. After an inspection, the Elisabeth was allowed to proceed on its voyage an hour later. No reports of injuries or pollution released.
