The 158 meter long container ship Elbsailor became disabled on the Kiel Canal near Schact-Audorf, Germany. The Elbsailor was bound for St. Petersburg from Hamburg when it suffered engine failure. The crew quickly peformed an emergency anchor keeping the boxship from running aground. However, the Elbsailor swung into the fairway blocking all traffic.

Authorities were alerted and two tugs were dispatched to take the Elbsailor under tow. A few hours later the tugs towed the Elbsailor and proceeded to Klein-Königsförde where the vessel moored. Reports state the crew were assisted by technicians and restarted the engine. The Elbsailor proceeded towards Holtenau escorted by a tug. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On January  10, the  367 meter long, 127015 dwt container ship Gustav Maersk ran aground in the Messina Strait near Torre Cavallo, Italy. The Gustav Maersk en route to Gioia Tauro from Rijeka entered the Messia Strait.  While it maneuvered to bring on a pilot, the boxship ran aground just off the shoreline.

The vessel requested assistance with two tugs responding.  The tugs were able to refloat the Gustav Maersk and the vessels proceeded to Gioia Tauro.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 200 meter long, 30250 dwt container ship Wan Hai 301 allided with the docked 267 meter long, 55612 dwt container ship APL Denver at Johor Port in Pasir Gudang, Singapore. The Wan Hai 301 had lost control in the port when the vessel suffered power blackout after its generator failed. The Wan  Hai 301 bow struck the APL Denver amidship resulting in hull damage to the APL Denver.

The hull was holed at the waterline allowing some water ingress. The allision also punctured a starboard fuel tank on the APL Denver spilling some 300 tons of oil into the sea.  

Local authorities responded and placed booms to protect nearby mangroves. Reports state pollution has impacted a nearby fish farm and may have contaminated fish stocks. Additionally, booms were placed near reservoirs to prevent oil residue entering the system. No reports of injuries on either vessel.
