Collision off Kobe

On May 4, the 141 meter long, 11,913 dwt container ship SITC Osaka collided with the 338 meter long, 103,207 dwt container ship NYK Venus near Rokko Island, Kobe, Japan. The SITC Osaka was entering Kobe while the NYK Venus was leaving he harbor when the two vessels collided.  Initial reports stated the NYK Venus did not sustain significant damage and was allowed to continue on its voyage. The SITC Osaka sustained damage to its port stern section above the waterline.

On May 10, still berthed in Kobe unloading containers, a fire broke out among one of the damage containers on the stern section of the SITC Osaka.  Authorities dispatched fire fighting crews to the scene along with fire boats.  The fire burnt several containers, but there were no reports of injuries.

On April 27, the 116 meter long container ship Kuala Mas caught fire near Nirwana Island, Kepulauan Seribu, Teluk Jakarta, Indonesia. The Kuala Mas has departed from Jakarta with 18 crew bound for Malahayati, Banda Aceh with 45 containers. An electrical short in the engine room ignited the blaze which quickly spread into additional compartments.  The 18 crew on board weren’t able to extinguish the fire and requested assistance.  Authorities dispatched several vessels to the scene and began a joint fire fighting effort through the superstructure.  The fire fighters were able to extinguish the blaze, but the Kuala Mas sustained significant damage.  No reports of injuries to the 18 crew on board.

Jian Feng Ling

On April 5, the 123 meter long, 2403 dwt ro-ro passengers ferry Jian Feng Ling collided with the 185 meter long, 44593 dwt container ship Hong Yang in the Hainan Strait near Haikou, China. The Hong Yang struck the starboard hull of the Jian Feng Ling causing considerable damage. The ferry had damage on both the car and passenger decks with several passengers injured and multiple vehicles damaged. The Hong Yang sustained damage to its bow, but did not have any injuries on board. Reports state the Hong Yang was en route to Qinzhou while the Jian Feng Ling was headed for Haikou.
