The 143 meter long passenger cruise ship L’Austral allided with the floodgate entering the IJmuiden.  The L’Austral was entering the lock from the North Sea when it struck the middle lock gate.  The gate sustained some damage, but was still operational. The L’Austral sustained scratches and dents on the bow. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The passenger ship was allowed to proceed on to Hamburg under its own power.

Ocean Countess

The 167 meter long passenger ship Ocean Countess caught fire while berthed at the Chalkis Shipyards at Halkida, Greece.  The fire started on the upper decks of the vessel where materials had been stored.  The fire quickly grew beyond the control of the five crewmen aboard the cruise ship.  Local fire brigades were requested who dispatched multiple crews to the scene.  Multiple fire tugs also assisted fighting the blaze while other tugs moved other vessels which had been tied up close to the Ocean Countess.  No reports of injuries.

Reports state booms had been placed around the Ocean Countess as a precautionary measure.  The cruise ship had been laid up since 2012, but had been expected to return to service in 2014.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

MSC Magnifica destroys beacon

The 294 meter long, 9429 dwt cruise ship MSC Magnifica allided with the pierhead at the harbor entrance at Piräus, Greece. The MSC Magnifica suffered a small gash to the portside hull above the waterline.  No reports of injuries to the 2,469 passengers and 976 crew on board.  The breakwater sustained damage with the pier light completely demolished. Reports state that bad weather conditions was a factor for the allision.  Earlier reports that the vessel had gone aground were incorrect.
