The 261 meter long, 8293 dwt passenger cruise ship Dawn Princess caught fire off Napier, New Zealand.   The fire started in an electrical substation while the vessel was sailing between Wellington and Napier.   The crew fought the fire for over an hour while passengers were ordered to their muster station.  The crew was able to extinguish the blaze and the vessel was able to proceed to Napier under its own power.  No reports of injuries to passengers or crew.  No further details reported.

Costa Concordia Salvage Update

After 18 months lying on it’s side, the Coast Concordia is slowing sinking further into the sea.  Reports state there is concern the cruise ship may collapse under its own weight.   Weakened by the grounding while rust eats away at the steel hull, the vessel has compressed some 3 meters.   Recent inspections have found the bow has dropped deeper into the water.   Plans to remove the vessel has been stalled by harsh sea conditions, but the salvage company has announce they would have one chance to pull the vessel upright and float it away sometime mid-September.   The salvage team would use multiple cranes slowly lifting the Costa Concordia over a 12 hour period.

Another note: The salvage operation extracted 96 tons of granite from the 70-meter long gash along the Concordia’s hull.

The 208 meter long, 4915 dwt passenger cruise ship Zenith caught fire near Venice, Italy.  The fire started in the vessel’s engine room while the cruise ship was en route to Venice from Ravenna with 1672 passengers on board.  The crew was able to extinguish the blaze, but the fire had damaged the main engine disabling the ship.   The Zenith dropped anchor until it could be towed to Venice.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.  Reports state the repairs to the engine would be completed by the following day.
