Sea Bay

The 243 meter long, 108760 dwt tanker Sea Bay became disabled and ran aground off Zeebrugge, Belgium. The Sea Bay was en route to Antwerp when it suffered engine failure and power blackout. The tanker went adrift and grounded on a sandbank some eight kilometers offshore. Unable to refloat itself, the Sea Bay requested assistance. Four tugs were dispatched and refloated the tanker on the following high tide. The tugs towed the Sea Bay to Ostend before proceeding to Zeebrugge for inspection.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On January 17, the 101 meter long, 5500 dwt cargo vessel FWN Ruby became disabled off Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. The FWN Ruby was headed for Ambriz when it suffered engine failure and went adrift. The FWN Ruby requested assistance and authorities dispatched a vessel to the scene. The FWN Ruby was taken under tow and proceeded to Las Palmas for repairs. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Reports state the crew was able to make repairs and continued on its voyage.

The 72 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Driade caught fire near Ischia, Italy. The Driade had departed from Naples bound for Casamicciola when a fire broke out in the engine room disabling the vessel. The fire spewed out dense plumes of smoke making it difficult to contain. The Driade contacted authorities who dispatched rescue vessels to the scene.  The Coast Guard arrived a short time later and transferred 12 passsengers off the Driade. Two passengers suffered injuries and later taken to hospital for treatment. The Driade crew were able to contain the blaze and a tug took the ferry under tow back to Naples.
