The 186 meter long, 26735 dwt bulk carrier Mandarin became disabled on the St. Lawrence River near Massena, New York. The Mandarin was proceeding upstream from Montreal bound for Toronto when it suffered engine failure. The crew was able to maintain control of the vessel, but the vessel had to berth at the Eisenhower Lock to make repairs. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
The 152 meter long, 10600 dwt container ship Heinrich Schepers ran aground on the Kiel Canal near the bridge at Grünental, Germany. While en route to Kotka from Hamburg, the boxship suffered engine damage. The crew attempted an emergency anchorage, but the vessel ran up on the northern embankment and became stuck. No reports of injuries. Traffic on the Kiel Canal around the Heinrich Schepers was halted as the boxship blocked the fairway.
The 82 meter long cargo vessel Mosvik became disabled just outside the Kiel Canal near Holtenau, Germany. The Mosvik was headed to Creeksea from Riga with a cargo of plywood when it lost stability. The Mosvik heeled over to 30 degrees to port and threaten to capsize. The 12 crew on board sent out a distress call and attempted to right the cargo vessel by dropping part of deckload of plywood.
Multiple tugs along with patrol vessels, DGzRS lifeboat and a crane vessel arrived on scene. While some vessels attempted to recover the deck cargo, others assisted the Mosvik crew in stabilizing the vessel. Traffic was halted on the canal until the cargo was recovered. The operation lasted 6 hours before all the cargo was secured. The Mosvik was later escorted by a tug to Kiel. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
