On August 21, the 80 meter long, 2647 dwt cargo vessel MY Zeynep (IMO: 9701906) became disabled on the Dardanelles near Nara Burnu, Turkey. The MY Zeynep was headed to Romania from Greece when it suffered a mechanical failure and lost power. The vessel requested assistance with Turkish authorities dispatching the tug Kurtarma-19 (IMO: 9995129). The tug took the cargo vessel under tow and proceeded to the Şevketiye anchorage. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
On the afternoon of August 19, the 24 meter long, 150 gt high-speed catamaran passenger ship Falkefjell (IMO: 9605346) became disabled on Vargsundet north of Lille Lerresfjord, Norway. The Falkefjell was underway from Hammerfest to Alta with 10 passengers when the vessel struck a whale. Passengers reported they felt a thud before spotting the whale thrashing in the water. Witnesses stated seeing large amounts of blood in the water before the whale perished and sank below the surface. There were no injuries on the Falkefjell, but the impact had damaged the passenger ship as the vessel had lost engine power and went adrift.
Reports stated a service boat from a nearby fish farm, the 193 gt passenger ship Hornøy (IMO: 9768980) and the 13 meter long NSSR lifeboat Utvær (MMSI: 257959900) were to the aid of the disabled Falkefjell. The 10 passengers were transferred off to the Hornøy and proceeded to Hammerfest. The Utvær took the Falkefjell under tow and proceeded to Hammerfest. No details of the extent of damage caused by the incident, but no water ingress was reported.
On August 14, the 247 meter long, 114439 dwt tanker Tenacity Venture (IMO:9773052) became disabled on the Bosphorus near Kandilli, Turkey. The Tenacity Venture was headed for Romania from Gibraltar with a cargo of 90,730 tons of crude oil when it suffered engine failure in the strait. The tanker contacted Turkish authorities who dispatched the tugs Kurtarma-5 (IMO: 9463164), Kurtarma-8 (IMO: 9598610) and Kurtarma-11 (IMO: 9854399) to assist. Escorted by Kurtarma-8, the Tenacity Venture was towed to an anchorage off Büyükdere where it was assisted by Kurtarma-5 and Kurtarma-11.
No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. During the incident, traffic was halted temporarily in the Bosphorus.
