On September 8, the 25 meter long passenger ship Jewel caught fire on the East River near Governors Island, New York. While on a cruise with 90 passengers and 4 crew, a fire started in the vessel’s engine room.  The crew alerted authorities who dispatched several rescue vessels to the scene. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the vessel and transported to lower Manhattan.  No reports of injuries. Reports state the fire was later extinguished and the vessel was taken under tow back to port. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 180 meter long, 34627 dwt bulk carrier Rainbow Quest struck the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River in New York.  The vessel’s light tower struck the underside of the bridge.  Authorities stopped traffic on the bridge for two hours  while it was inspected for damage.  No damage was reported and the bridge was reopen for traffic.  Reports state the river’s tide was high, but not at its highest point. No injuries or pollution released.

The 140 foot long, 417 gt high speed ferry Seastreak Wall Street allided with a pier in lower Manhattan Island, New York.   The Seastreak ferry had made its crossing the East River from New Jersey with 300 passengers approaching near Pier 11.  Instead of slowing down, the ferry struck the pier at 10 miles per hour.  Over 70 passengers suffered injuries as they were thrown across the deck.   Reports state many suffered neck and shoulder injuries along with cuts and bruises.  Two passengers sustained critical injuries.   The ferry suffered a gash in the port hull.   No reports of pollution being released.  The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident.    Reports do state that all five crew members were tested negative for alcohol.
