The 142 meter long, 9654 dwt container ship Hanse Spirit became disabled on the Elbe River after suffering an engine failure. The vessel dropped anchor and requested assistance. A tug towed the Hanse Spirit to Cuxhaven where it berthed and will undergo repairs. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
The 133 meter long, 12600 dwt freighter Abu Rdees suffered a fire while proceeding on the outer Elbe River. The Abu Rdees was proceeding in ballast between Klaipeda and Bremen when a fire broke out in the crew’s accomodation section of the vessel. The vessel sent out a distress call with the DGzRS lifeboat from Cuxhaven responding. The crew of the Abu Rdees was able to get the fire under control. Five of the 37 men on board were injured by smoke inhalation. The freighter was able to moor at Neuwerk where local firefighters and emergency crews boarded the vessel. No details on the extent of damage the fire caused on the freighter.
The 264 meter long, 51000 dwt container vessel CMA CGM Jamaica collided with the 89 meter long, 3280 dwt tanker Koesterberg on the Elbe River near Hamburg, Germany. Both vessels were proceeding in a heavy fog when the Jamaica struck the port side of the Koesterberg’s hull. The tanker suffered a 20 to 30 centimeter hole allowing water ingress into the ballast tanks causing the vessel to develop a slight list. No major damage to the CMA CGM Jamaica was reported. Both vessels were able to continue to a quay under their own power. The tanker will pump out its cargo of fuel to another vessel to allow repair work. No report of injuries or pollution being released. An investigation into the incident is being conducted.
