Marreje Aaltje Aground

Marreje Aaltje Aground

The 20-meter long 190 ton fishing vessel Marreje Aaltje went aground in the North Sea near the coast of Margate, England.   The Margate lifeboat was sent out to aid the trawler as there was concern the vessel may capsize.   The sandbanks in the area are known to be steep and vessels can keel over if they do not setting correctly.   However, the Marreje Aaltje went aground near high tide and with the assistance of another trawler, the Marreje Aaltje was towed clear of the sandbank.  Reports state there was no damage and the vessel continued fishing.

The 5000 dwt freighter Paula C went aground on the Isle of Wight.   The Paula C was in ballast heading to Cowes when it encountered trouble.   The crew plan to pump out the ballast tanks to lighten the vessel in an effort to refloat it on the next high tide.   The vessel was able to be freed with the assistance of a tug then proceeded to Saltmead where it is lying at anchor awaiting an inspection.   The Yarmouth lifeboat and Solent Coastguard provided assistance.
