The 39 meter long passenger ferry Tawindo No. 2 caught fire near Nunukan, Indonesia. The Tawindo No. 2 was en route to Tarakan City from Malaysia with 86 persons on board when a fire broke out in the vessel’s engine room. The crew responded and were able to extinguish the blaze by cutting off the fuel supply.  No reports of injuries.

While the extent of damage was not reported, the Tawindo No. 2 was reported to be disabled after the blaze. The vessel requested assistance with patrol vessels responding. All passengers were safely transferred and taken to Tarakan City. Reports state the ferry was to be taken under tow back to port. Authorities have stated they will launch an investigation into the incident.

The 151 meter long, 5455 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Med Star caught fire near Rhodes, Greece. The ferry had departed from Rhodes with 33 vehicles bound for Santorini when the vessel suffered a fire in the engine room. The fire quickly grew spreading into the ferry’superstructure. Twenty persons on board abandoned ship into a lifeboat while 12 crew remained on board to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities dispatched multiple vessels to assist which arrived on scene a short time later. Reports state the vessel was towed back to Rhodes and the fire was brought under control.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 62 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Sterna allided with a pontoon at the ferry terminal in Lillmälö, Pargas, Finland. The ferry was arriving with 21 passengers when it suffered  a malfunction and struck the pontoon at a high rate of speed.

The Sterna struck hard enough that the pontoon became entangled with its hull.  Reports state one ramp also sustained significant damage. The damaged ramp was completely unusable preventing some 16 vehicles to be unloaded.

Reports state some of the 21 passengers required some medical attention, but no reports of injuries. The Sterna was taken out of service for repairs.
