The 148 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Af Francesca caught fire off the Apulian Coast near Bari, Italy.  The ferry was proceeding from Bari to Durres, Albania with 203 passengers and 53 crew when a fire broke out in the engine room.  The crew was able to put the blaze out a short time later.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. The fire disabled the vessel and tugs were requested.  A tug arrived and towed the Af Francesca to Bari.  All passengers safely departed and were transferred to other vessels.  Authorities launched an investigation into the incident.

On April 28, the 186 meter long, 7150 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Sorrento caught fire in the Mediterranean Sea off Dragonera Island, Spain. The Sorrento had departed from Palma with 156 passengers  and crew en route to Valencia when a blaze broke out on the car deck. The fire spewed out plumes of thick black smoke. The crew tried to fight the blaze, but the intensity of the fire and smoke forced an evacuation into the ferry’s lifeboats.  Authorities were alerted and diverted four vessels and helicopters to the scene. Three crew members suffered smoke inhalation and were rescued by helicopter and taken for treatment. Reports state there were over 100 vehicles on board that were destroyed. Authorities were able to tow the burnt out ferry into Valencia. No reports of pollution released.

The 129 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry KM Mutiara Persada 1 ran aground in the Sunda Strait off Bakauheni, Indonesia. The ferry had run onto a reef a short time after leaving the port of Bakauheni was headed to Merak. No reports of injuries.  All the passengers were kept on board the night until conditions improved the following morning when they were safely evacuated. Reports state the vessel had not suffered water ingress.
