HELGOY

The 46 meter long, 15 dwt ro-ro ferry Helgoy ran aground near the island of Hestmannøy in Rødøy, Norway.   The ferry was en route with two passengers and four crew when it went aground  onto a reef.  No reports of injuries.  Passengers were safely transferred to another vessel.  Authorities dispatched a lifeboat to the scene to assist in refloating the Helgoy.  No damage or pollution released.

SPIRIT_OF_FIJI_ISLANDS

On October 11, 2031, the 2267 dwt ro-ro ferry Spirit of Fiji Islands caught fire while in the Luzon Strait.  The crew was unable to control the blaze and all 19 crew on board abandoned ship.  No reports of injuries.  The ferry was last reported on fire and  adrift.  No further details reported.

The 260 dwt passenger ferry Pope John Paul II collided with the freighter RKK 2 in the Mactan Channel off Cebu, Philippines.  The ferry had struck the side of the freighter after attempting to avoid an oncoming ship.   The Pope John Paul II had slowed down too much and was pulled by the strong current into the RKK which was anchored a short distance of a nearby pier.  No reports of injuries to the 742 passengers or 189 crew on board.  The RKK 2 suffered minor damage to its side railings  The Pope John Paul II was allow to proceed on its voyage to Cagayan de Oro.  The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
