On January 23, the 50 foot long fishing vessel Tamara became disabled off Block Island, Rhode Island. The Tamara requested assistance after its navigation equipment had failed while in strong winter storm with winds reaching 55 knots and 4 meter high waves. The Coast Guard dispatched a response boat, motor lifeboat and helicopter to the scene. The response boat arrived on scene and was able to attach a towline to the Tamara.  Both vessels proceeded to Newport and arrived later the same day. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 23 meter long fishing vessel L’Europe caught fire off Barfleur, France. The crew on board were alerted to a  fire broke that broke out in the engine room. The crew of the L’Europe engaged the fire suppressant system and were able to contain the blaze, but not before the main engine was damaged. Authorities dispatched a helicopter along with a SNSM lifeboat to the scene while two nearby trawlers proceeded to the L’Europe. Assisted by authorities, the crew were unable to restart the main engine, but were able to start an auxiliary motor to bring up the L’Europe trawl. The SNSM lifeboat escorted the L’Europe being towed by another trawler to Port-en-Bessin. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Captain John

Captain John

The 65 foot long fishing vessel Captain John sank off La Push, Washington. The fishing vessel alerted the Coast Guard that it was taking on water and the pumps on board were unable to keep up with the flooding. The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter along with a 47 foot long motor lifeboat to the scene. The helicopter arrived on scene and advised the crew to abandon ship into the vessel’s life raft. The lifeboat was able to rescue all five crew from the liferaft and brought them to La Push.  No reports of injuries. The Captain John sank in 2000 feet of water with its cargo of 70,000 pounds of fish and 800 tons of fuel. A small oil sheen was spotted over the wreck. Authorities have launched an investigation.
