On August 31, the 81 meter long, 2600 dwt fishing vessel Tokatu (IMO: 9816153)  became disabled in a storm on the Tasman Sea off Burnie, Tasmania. The Tokatu had suffered breakdown in the engine control resulting in the loss of maneuverability. The vessel requested assistance with two tugs from Burnie responding. The two tugs arrived on scene a few hours later and was able to get a towline over to the Tokatu. No reports of injuries to the 45 people on the vessel, damage or pollution released.

On August 13, the fishing vessel Mariah K caught fire 50 nautical miles off Brookings, Oregon. The fire was started after an explosion in the engine room. All three crew on board abandoned ship and later rescued by the charter vessel Eli’s Tide. The Coast Guard was alerted by the Eli’s Tide and dispatched the 47 motor lifeboat along with a helicopter to the scene. Two crew of the Mariah K were transferred to the lifeboat, but one crewman was airlifted by the Coast Guard helicopter and taken to hospital in San Francisco. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

During the early morning hours of August 17, the 30 meter long fishing vessel Min Long Yu 60877 (MMSI: 412445165) sank 6.5 miles off Dongding, Taiwan. The Min Long Yu 60877 had collided with another unidentified vessel and sunk. Authorities were alerted and dispatched three patrol vessels to the scene while nearby fishing vessels aided in the search for survivors. Four crew were later rescued from the water by the nearby fishing vessels.  Authorities stated they plan to continue to expand the search and rescue operation.  Reports state three crew are still missing.
