The 24 meter long, 91 gt fishing vessel Ming Maan Shyang No. 18 caught fire in the Indian Ocean some 700 miles south of Reunion Island. The vessel had sent out a distress call as the Ming Maan Shyang No. 18 rapidly became engulfed in flames. The distress call was relayed to near by vessels in the area. The fishing vessel Hung Yi responded and arrived on scene a short time later. The Hung Yi rescued 13 of the 15 crew off the Ming Maan Shyang No. 18 who had abandoned ship earlier onto 2 life rafts.

Reports state one crewman had suffered severe burns from the fire. The remaining two crew from the Ming Maan Shyang No. 18 were reported as missing.  A search and rescue operation was conducted around the area of the fishing vessel. The Ming Maan Shyang No. 18 was last reported to have it’s superstructure completely burnt, but the vessel was still afloat.

On October 17, the 29.7 meter long, 98 gt fishing vessel Long Jia Ming 6 caught fire while berthed at the Fiji Fish Jetty. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room and quickly spread through the superstructure. The crew attempted to extinguish the blaze, but their efforts were in vain.  The crew were forced to abandoned ship and authorities had the Long Jia Ming 6 towed away from the jetty and beached away from other vessels.

The local fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire, but not after much of the superstructure and hull of the Long Jia Ming 6 was burned away. Reports state the fuel tanks of the Long Jia Ming 6 had leaked due to the fire and pollution was spotted around the wreck. No reports of injuries.

On October 16, the 17 meter long fishing vessel Dianne capsized in Bustard Bay near Seventeen Seventy, Queensland, Australia. The trawler had capsized in bad weather during the night with the master at the helm and six crew asleep below. One crewman was able escape from the overturn vessel and clung to the hull for several hours before the Dianne sank. A passing yacht spotted him in the water and rescued him.

Reports state that several other crew had survived the capsizing and could be heard tapping inside the hull before the vessel sank. Authorities have launched a search and rescue in the surrounding area, but weather conditions has slowed the effort.  The six crew were still reported as missing.
