The 164 meter long, 10454 dwt ro-ro car carrier Modern Express became disabled in the Bay of Biscay while en route to Le Havre, France. The Modern Express was loaded with a cargo of vehicles and 3,700 tons of wood from Owendo, Gabon when it suffered a cargo shift.  The shift caused the car carrier to develop a heavy starboard list of 40 degrees.  The crew requested assistance and a helicopter was dispatched by Spanish authorities.  All 22 crew on board the car carrier was air lifted to safety.  A tug arrived on scene and was monitoring the situation. Reports state the owners  of the Modern Express have arranged to have a salvage firm to assess the risks and evaluate salvage options while the vessel remains far off the coast.

On January 14, the 16 meter long fishing vessel P’tit Ours became disabled off Lacanau, France. The trawler had got into difficulties in heavy swells and sent out a distress call. A SNSM lifeboat was dispatched to the scene. The lifeboat took the P’tit Ours under tow back to port. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 165 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Paglia Orba allided with the dock at Marseille, France. Strong winds caused the Paglia Orba to break its moorings during the night and the vessel struck the dock. The ferry sustained a dent above the waterline, but no water ingress.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The Paglia Orba was moved to a sheltered berth where it was inspected. Reports state the vessel was to resume its normal voyage to Corsica.
