The 101 meter long cargo ship Luno went ashore in the Bay of Biscay and  broke-up along the breakwater at  Anglet, France.  The Luno was en route in ballast to a nearby port when it suffered engine failure.  The cargo ship was driven ashore by heavy seas when it smashed into the breakwater.   Two helicopters responded to the scene lifting 12 crewmen to safety.  No reports of injuries. The seas continued to pound the Luno until it eventually broke-in-two.  The bow pushed up on the beach while the stern section later capsized and sank.  Some 120 cubic meters of fuel oil was on board the Luno.  Reports state some fuel was release, but the amount of pollution was minimal.

Lestran

On January 20, the 23 meter long fishing vessel Lestran went aground off Saint Guénolé, France.  The Estran was departing for Ireland when it went aground leaving the harbour.  The crew was following the channel buoys, but storms had moved the markers.   Two SNSM lifeboats responded to the scene and attempts to refloat the Lestran were unsuccessful.  The Lestran later capsized onto her starboard side and filled with water.   The five crew were rescued by local fire boat.   No reports of injuries.   A boom was placed around the vessel to contain any pollution released.   The following day the vessel’s fuel tanks were drained and the crew removed some equipment off the fishing vessel.  Reports state no attempts to refloat the vessel until a suitable tide.

Saint Nicolas

The 23 meter long fishing vessel Saint Nicolas BL 788028 went aground near Boulogne, France.  The Saint Nicolas had become disabled when its propeller was damaged when the vessel struck a drifting object.  The fishing vessel was taken under tow by another trawler, the Savior de Monde.  As both vessels headed to Boulogne in the heavy seas and strong winds, the towline broke.  The waves quickly pushed the Saint Nicolas ashore.  Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene.  The helicopter was able to winch up the five crew members to safety.  No reports of injuries.
