The 88 meter long, 4161 dwt cargo vessel Vita became disabled in the Celtic Sea near Ushant,, France. The Vita was en route to Puerto de Pasajes from Bremen with 3500 tons of steel when it suffered engine failure and power blackout. The crew requested assistance with the French authorities dispatching a rescue vessel to the scene. The 80 meter long rescue ship Abeille Bourbon arrived on scene and took the Vita under tow.  The two vessels proceeded to Brest.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On May 16, the 12 meter long, 20 gt fishing vessel L’île Maurice caught fire while moored at Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. The fire started after an explosion on board the trawler. The blaze quickly spread through out the vessel and the entire superstructure was engulfed in flames.

The local fire brigades were alerted with multiple brigades dispatched to the scene. With over 60 firefighters assisting, the fire was finally contained with the use of foam and water.

The Trawler had sustained significant damage and was waterlogged from the fire fighting efforts. Firefighters attempted to keep the L’île Maurice afloat using pumps to dewater the vessel.  Booms were placed around the L’île Maurice to contain any pollution released.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the explosion.

The 13 meter long fishing vessel Caraibes became disabled off Pierres-Vertes, France. The trawler had run over a net which became entangled in the vessel’s propeller. The Caraibes went adrift and requested assistance. The SNSM lilfeboat was dispatched to the scene and towed back to port. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
