The 656 foot long, 36563 dwt bulk carrier Federal Kivalina went aground on the St. Lawrence River near the Thousand Islands Bridge.  The vessel had lost steering as it passing through the American Narrows section of the river. The vessel avoided striking the bridge, but ran hard aground resulting in a 2 foot hole in its bow.  Authorities placed booms around the vessel, but no reports of pollution. No reports of injuries.  Traffic on the St. Lawrence River was halted until salvage tugs were able to refloat the vessel a few days later.  The Federal Kivalina was en route to Montreal with 23,000 metric tons of canola seed.

The 97 meter long coastal freighter Zhong Xing 2 collided with the 302 meter long, 79278 dwt container ship Mol Motivator off Hong Kong near Po Toi Island.  The two vessels were proceeding in heavy rain when the Mol Motivator collided with the Zhong Xing 2.  The Zhong Xing 2 quickly sank trapping 11 of its 12 crew.  One crewman from the Zhong Xing 2 was able to escape and was later rescued by a nearby fishing boat.  Authorities  from Guangdong launched an air-sea rescue operation looking for any other survivors.  An oil slick and some lifevests were spotted where the freighter sank.  No reports of injuries on the Mol Motivator.  The Zhong Xing 2 was loaded with cement from Hebei province bound for port of Haikou in Hainan province at the time.  The  MOL Motivator was leaving Hong Kong en route to Yantian.
