On July 14, the 228 meter long, 81887 dwt bulk carrier Amakusa Island ran aground at Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada.  The Amakusa Island had departed from the Ridley Island Port dock with 80,000 tons of coal  proceeding to a nearby anchorage when it grounded.  The vessel suffered  hull damage and reported water ingress flooding two buoyancy compartments. The Amakusa Island quickly developed a small list after the grounding,  but was in no danger of sinking.  The Coast Guard responded to the scene and assessed the situation. Tugs were requested and arrived on the scene a short time later.   At high tide, the tugs were able to refloat the Amakusa Island and proceeded to a nearby anchorage.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  Damage to the hull prevents the Amakusa Island to depart from Prince Rupert.  No reports if repairs will be done in situ or at a berth in Prince Rupert.  The Canadian Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

The 6700 mt cargo ship Mu Du Bong ran aground in the Gulf of Mexico near Tuxpan, Mexico.  The Mu Du Bong was en route to Tuxpan from Cuba in ballast to load a cargo of fertilizer when it ran aground onto a reef.  No reports of injuries.  The Mexican Navy along with environmental agencies have dispatched teams to the scene due to the possible damage caused to the reef area.  Reports state the crew of the Mu Du Bong did not follow the establish route resulting in the grounding.  Federal authorities have stated they could impose sanctions on the vessel for breaking navigation rules.

The 70 meter long, 2193 dwt bulk carrier Priyanka went adrift near Revdanda, India.  The Priyanka was en route from Mumbai to a dock near Revdanda with 19 metric tons of iron ore pellets.  As the vessel arrived off Revdanda, conditions prevented the Priyanka  to berth.  The crew dropped anchor and waited for the weather to improve.  A few hours later, the vessel’s anchor line parted and the Priyanka drifted towards the shore.  The vessel’s cargo of iron ore shifted and the vessel listed over to port.  The crew requested assistance with the Indian Coast Guard responding.  Five crew on the Priyanka launched the vessel’s life raft and abandoned ship.  The remaining crew were airlifted by a Coast Guard helicopter to safety.  No reports of injuries. Reports state the Coast Guard was able to secure the vessel and drop anchor again.
