The 1013 foot long bulk self-unloader Paul R. Tregurtha ran aground on Lake Superior in Duluth harbor, Minnesota.  The Paul R. Tregurtha was departing Duluth with a cargo of coal when it made a navigational error.  The vessel ran aground a few meters off the shoreline.  Two tugs were dispatched and were able to refloat the Paul R. Tregurtha later the same day.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 656 foot long, 36563 dwt bulk carrier Federal Rideau ran aground in Lake St. Clair near the entrance to the Detroi River.  The Federal Rideau was downbound heading to Montreal with 22672 tons of wheat when it suffered a steering failure and ran onto a mud bank. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Initial attempts to refloat the bulk carrier with two tugs failed.  Another attempt with a total of five tugs was to be attempted on the following day.  Authorities reported that Federal Rideau is partially blocking the channel, but traffic was still open.

The 225 meter long, 38960 dwt self-unloading bulk carrier Atlantic Erie ran aground on Lake Erie near Port Colborne,  Ontario.  The vessel was approaching Port Colborne when it veered out of the navigation channel and ran into shallow water.  The vessel’s bow was holed allowing water ingress into the forepeak.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  A tug was dispatched to the scene,  but no reports when refloating operations will begin.  Canadian authorities have dispatched a team to the scene to start investigating the incident.
