The 264 meter long, 5200 dwt passenger cruise ship Splendour of the Seas caught fire while in the Ionian Sea near Argostoli, Greece. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room sending thick smoke into some of the cabins. Passengers stated the vessel smelt of burnt plastic and rubber, but the fire was contained to the engine room and was quickly extinguished.  Twenty persons on board were treated for smoke inhalation.  The fire damaged one of the vessel’s engines, but the vessel is able to proceed with its other engine. Due to the damage by the fire, the Splendour of the Seas diverted to Venice. No reports of pollution released.

On August 6, the 193 meter long, 6148 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Nissos Rodos allided with the 199 meter long, 5000 dwt passenger cruise ship Seabourn Odyssey in Mykonos, Greece. The Nissos Rodos had arrived from Ermoupolis and was doing a maneuver in the port when it struck the berthed Seabourn Odyssey. Authorities inspected both vessels and  found both had just slight damage.  Both vessels were allowed them to continue on their voyage. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

Champion Jet 1

Two ferries collided in the port of Piraeus, Greece. The 27 meter long, 350 dwt catamaran passenger ferry Champion Jet 1 collided with 35 meter long, 161 gt Flying Dolphin Athina as the vessels were leaving port. No reports of injuries on either vessel. Reports state one of the ferries suffered some damage. The Champion Jet 1 was en route to Sifnos, Milos and Santorini with 307 passengers.  The Flying Dolphin Athina was headed to Angistri and Aegina with 60 passengers on board.
