MSC Magnifica destroys beacon

The 294 meter long, 9429 dwt cruise ship MSC Magnifica allided with the pierhead at the harbor entrance at Piräus, Greece. The MSC Magnifica suffered a small gash to the portside hull above the waterline.  No reports of injuries to the 2,469 passengers and 976 crew on board.  The breakwater sustained damage with the pier light completely demolished. Reports state that bad weather conditions was a factor for the allision.  Earlier reports that the vessel had gone aground were incorrect.

Stella

The 33 meter long, 284 dwt freighter Stella sank in the Aegean Sea off Karpathos Island, Greece.  The Stella was en route to Cyprus from Aliaga, Turkey in ballast when the vessel began to sink.   The crew sent out a distress call before escaping into the vessel’s liferaft.  Five of the 6 crew on board were later rescued.   The master of the vessel was not with the crew and is still reported as missing.   The cause of the sinking was not known.

GULER

The 79 meter long, 2421 dwt freighter Guler went aground off the Island of Corfu, Greece.  The Guler was headed to Marghera, Italy from Thessaloniki with a cargo of ore when it grounded.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The Guler suffered some hull damage and had water ingress.   The freighter was able to refloat itself by its own means and proceeded to anchor off Corfu awaiting inspection.
