The 398 meter long, 158200 dwt container ship Eugen Maersk suffered a fire while crossing the Gulf of Aden from Jebel Ali.  The fire started in one of the containers and spread to two nearby containers.    The crew responded and tried to contain the blaze.   The vessel proceeded to an anchorage off Djibouti where a tug with fire-fighting equipment was able to extinguish the fire.   The Eugen Maersk proceeded to container terminal at Djibouti where it unloaded containers damaged by the fire.   The vessel is expected to proceed to Port Said.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 167 meter long, 27209 dwt bulk freighter Atlantik Confidence caught fire in the Gulf of Aden near Masirah, Oman.   The fire started in the vessel’s engine room and quicky got out of control.   The crew sent out a distress call before abandoning ship into the freighter’s lifeboats.   The vessel Pluto Chemfleet was nearby  and was able to rescue all 21 crewmen.   No reports of injuries.   The Atlantik Confidence was last reported disabled and sinking by the stern.

Shiv Sagar Lost

Shiv Sagar Lost

The 65 meter long freighter Shiv Sagar was reported lost in the Gulf of Aden near the coast of Dhofar, Oman.  The vessel was heading for Salalahwhen it encountered strong winds and rough seas.   Reports state the vessel capsized and sank.  The vessel was able to make a distress call alerting the Oman Coast Guard.   The Coast Guard was able to rescue six crewmen. Four crewmen bodies were recovered with another five men still reported as missing.   The rescued men were taken to hospital and later transferred to a police station.  The crew reported that the vessel sank quickly allowing no time to prepare the lifeboats.
