Just after midnight on August 12, the 212 meter long, 6080 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Megastar (IMO: 9773064) caught fire in the Gulf of Finland near Helsinki, Finland. The Megastar was just minutes away from berthing in Helsinki when the crew was alerted of a fire on the vehicle deck. The crew discovered that a bus had caught fire and quickly activated the vessel’s sprinkler system which extinguished the blaze.  No reports of injuries to the passengers or crew on board.

Authorities state the bus was removed off the Megastar. The fire did not result in damaging the ferry. Reports state the ferry was back in service the following day on its regular schedule.

The 23 meter long schooner Alexandra went aground near the west side of Sandhamn near Helsinki, Finland.  The sailing vessel was passing through Kungs Sound when it suffered water ingress. Unable to control the flooding, the crew decided to run the Alexandra aground in shallow water to avoid it possibly sinking.  Authorities were alerted and arrived on scene quickly.  Pumps were placed on board the schooner and were able to dewater the vessel.  Rescue vessel took the Alexandra under tow and proceeded to Skatudden for repairs.  No reports of injuries of the four crew on board.

The 163 meter long, ro-ro cargo vessel Finnkraft caught fire near Helsinki, Finland. The fire started in a heating system on a stairwell in the bow section.  The fire spewed toxic smoke spreading to several decks.  The crew quickly responded and was able to bring the fire under control and later assisted by the local fire brigade in extinguishing the blaze.  The smoke was then later ventilated from the areas impacted.  No reports of injuries.
