The 451 gt high-speed ferry First Ferry III collided with a barge near Chaeung Chau Island, Hong Kong.   The First Ferry III had departed from Hong Kong en route to Chaeung Chau Island in dense fog when the ferry starboard hull struck the barge.   Thirty passengers were injured with 3in critical condition.  No reports of injuries on the barge or the tug pulling it. Reports state the ferry had spotted the barge on radar, but the crew had underestimated its length.

The ferry Lamma IV collided with the 28 meter long catamaran ferry Sea Smooth off Lamma Island, Hong Kong, China.   The Lamma IV had been chartered by Hong Kong Electric to take 121 staff and their family for an outing to see a fireworks display.   Ten minutes into the voyage,  the Sea Smooth  slammed into the side near the stern of the Lamma IV.   The Lamma IV quickly sank by the stern causing a steep list.  As the vessel went nearly 90 degrees into the air, passengers fell overboard into the water.  Luckily many vessels arrived on scene and were able to pull over 100 people out of the water.   The Sea Smooth suffered damage to its port bow.   Reports state over 30 were killed and another 100 people were injured.     Reports state the Sea Smooth left the scene of the collision and did not participate in the rescue.

Collision off Hong Kong

Collision off Hong Kong

The 302 meter long, 78830 dwt container ship MOL Maneuver collided with the 275 meter long, 51985 dwt container ship Zhen He in the South China Sea near Hong Kong.  There were no reports of injuries or pollution being released from either vessels.  The cause of the collision is not yet known.   The MOL Maneuver was able to proceed under its own power en route to Singapore from Yantian.   The status of the Zhen He was not reported.
