On February 3, the 116 meter long, 3340 dwt cargo vessel Amur 2516 was struck by ice in the Azov Sea between Dolzhanskaya and Yeysk, Russia. The Amur 2516 was headed to Ambarli, Turkey loaded with a cargo of peas when it struck an ice flow. The ice cut into the vessel’s hull and the cargo vessel suffered water ingress.  The pumps on board were unable to keep up with the flooding and the vessel was at risk of foundering. The master of the Amur 2516 turn course and intentionally ran the vessel aground in shallow waters and sandy bottom near Dolzhanskaya.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. Reports state the vessel remains aground waiting until repairs can be made on the hull.  Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 226 meter long bulk carrier CWB Marquis ran aground on the St. Lawrence River near Beauharnois, Montérégie. The bulk carrier departed from Hamilton loaded with iron ore when it grounded near the locks after striking large block of ice. The CWB Marquis remained aground until later the same day when it was pulled free. The bulker proceeded to Melocheville for further inspection. The CWB Marquis was the first vessel to travel on the St. Lawrence Seaway of the 2015 season.

The 103 meter long, 10718 dwt  reefer fishing vessel Dalniy Vostok sank in the Sea of Okhotsk off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The trawler was fishing with 132 persons on board when it was struck by an ice flow holing the vessel. The engine room was quickly flooded by water ingress. Without power, the vessel sank within 15 minutes. The Dalniy Vostok was able to send out a distress call with several vessels in the area responding. Some 63 persons were reported rescued, but another 54 crew perished in the freezing waters.
