The 60 meter long fishing vessel Antarctic Chieftain became disabled in the South Ocean off Antarctica between Rossøya and Victoria Land. The fishing vessel with its 27 crew on board had become stuck in the ice with 3 of the vessel 4 propellers crushed by the ice. The crew requested assistance with the US Coastguard  icebreaker Polar Star responding.  The Polar Star broke the ice and reached the Antarctic Chieftain  a few days later. The Polar Star will tow the disabled fishing vessel to the open ocean where the fishing vessel Janas will take the tow and proceed  to the nearest harbour. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

On January 28, the 90 foot long towboat Winnie C became stuck in the ice on the Ohio River near New Matamoras, Ohio.  The Winnie C was pushing 15 coal barges when it became stranded  mid-river in the ice after being stuck in the ice off Moundsville earlier the same day.  Another towboat the 100 foot long Amber Brittany became stranded in the ice off Evansville, Indiana.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution.    The Coast Guard reported that the ice continues to grow thicker as cold weather continues in the region.  It is not uncommon for vessels to remain stranded until the ice thaws.

MESABI_MINER

The 1004 foot long, dwt 62335 bulk carrier Mesabi Miner collided with the 68 meter long, Coast Guard cutter Hollyhock near the Mackinac Bridge in the Straits of Mackinac.  The Hollyhock was breaking ice with several lake freighters following behind with the Miner following astern of the icebreaker.  When the Hollyhock hit an ice pressure ridge, it suddenly halted.  The Mesabi Miner was unable to stop and struck the stern of the cutter.  The cutter had significant damage to its stern and fantail while the Mesabi Miner sustained damage to its bow.  The Mesabi Miner was freed later the same day by the assistance of cutters Biscayne Bay and Katmai Bay.  The Hollyhock proceeded to St. Ignace aided by the cutter Biscayne Bay.  The Mesabi Miner continued on its way to Gary, Indiana with its cargo of iron ore.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.
