The 620 dwt research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy became trapped in ice off the coast of Antarctica near Stillwell Island.  The Akademik Shokalskiy had been at anchor 40 miles off Mawson’s Hut on Cape Denison, Antarctica with 74 people when it departed for the Mertz glacier.  The vessel became stuck in heavy ice floes as it approached Cape de la Motte.  The vessel contacted authorities and three icebreakers  were dispatched to aid the Akademik Shokalskiy.  Reports state the nearest vessels were at least two days away, but the research vessel was in no immediate danger. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On December 15, the 114 meter long, 3134 dwt freighter Sandra II was damaged by ice while attempting to enter the Azov Sea.  The Sandra II was following an icebreaker from Azov when the vessel’s hull was cut by ice breaching the ballast tank in the foreship.  No reports of injuries.  The Sandra II diverted to Eysk for repairs.  The Sandra II was en route to Turkey with 3000 tons of wheat.

The 113 meter long, 3260 dwt freighter Aspro went aground in the Azov Sea near Eysk, Russia.  The Aspro was pushed out of the navigation channel by ice flows before it grounded.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The vessel was still reported aground five days after the grounding.
