The 245 meter long, 40972 dwt container ship OOCL Belgium became stranded in ice in the Strait of Belle Isle off the Labrador coast of Canada.   The container ship was en route to Europe from Montreal when it became stuck in thick ice.   The vessel requested assistance with an icebreaker dispatched to the scene.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  Reports state that vessels usually take alternative routes as it is common to find the heavy ice in the area during this time of the year.

The 225 meter long, 64377 dwt bulk freighter Rapier became trapped ice in the Japan Sea in the Tatarskiy Strait.  The Rapier departed from Korea bound to Vanino when it was caught in the ice.   The vessel remained adrift in the ice and was close of going ashore.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  Reports state there are no icebreakers in the vicinity, but two tugs are attempting to aid the trapped Rapier.  In addition, The freighters Pioneer Rossii, Tessa and Lu Hai are stuck in ice, but are not at risk.

The 114 meter long, 3353 dwt coastal freighter Nikolay L went aground on the River Don near Rostov-on-Don, Russia.   The Nikolay L departed Rostov-on-Don with a cargo of manganese ore bound for Turkey when it went aground.   The freighter suffered cracks in the hull which allowed water ingress into the hull.   No reports of injuries or pollution.   Reports state the Nikolay L may have been damaged by ice and was grounded to avoid the vessel sinking.
