Alma Rudderless

Alma Rudderless

The 97 meter long, 4000 dwt freighter Alma became disabled near Hornafjordur, Iceland.  The Alma travelling from St. Petersburg, Russia to Kollafjordur with 3,000 tons of frozen seafood contacted the Coast Guard that the vessel had lost its rudder and was disabled.  A tug was nearby and was able to reach the Alma.   The tug was able to attach a towline and pull the Alma out to sea, but the line broke a few hours later.  Luckily, the Iceland Coast Guard Cutter Thor had arrived on scene and take the Alma under tow.  Both vessels proceeded to Faskrudsfjordur safely.  An inspection of the Alma found the entire rudder had been lost.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
