On the evening of April 14, the 90 meter long self-propelled container barge Alphenaar (MMSI: 244059204) allided on the Ijssel near Krimpen upon the IJssel, Netherlands. The Alphenaar was headed to Moerdijk from Rotterdam with a cargo of containers when it struck the underside of the Algera Bridge.  One container sustained a large dent and the the bridge suffered some paint damage.  Traffic on the bridge was not impacted and the Alphenaar was able to proceed under its own power to a nearby mooring. Reports state that authorities conducted a short investigation and collected a statement from the captain.  There were no reports of injuries or pollution released. This is the third bridge strike by the Alphenaar within the last 9 months. See posts on the allisions in October 2024 and November 2024 for further details.

On November 27, the 80 meter long self-propelled barge Speranza (MMSI: 244670229) ran aground on the IJssel near Westervoort, Netherlands. The Speranza loaded with sand and gravel had stranded due to undisclosed reasons and sustained water ingress. The local fire brigade responded to the scene and used pumps to de-water the vessel.  Authorities had to halt traffic until the Speranza was refloated. The vessel later proceeded two kilometers north of the incident location where it will be inspected. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Stella Maris

The 24 meter long self-propelled barge Stella Maris caught fire on the IJssel at Capelle upon the IJssel, Netherlands. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room while it was proceeding to Rotterdam.  The fire quickly spread through the vessel and engulfed the wheelhouse.  A workboat pushed the Stella Maris to the shore where local fire brigade and boats extinguished the blaze.  The sole person on board was rescued without any injuries.

 

The full extent of damage to the vessel had not been reported.  The cause of the fire was under investigation.
