Christina Belcher

On December 24, the 28 meter long towboat Christina Belcher collided with a sand barge on the Ohio River at mile marker 952 near Joppa, Illinois. The Christina Belcher was pushing two oil barges loaded with 921,000 gallons of crude oil which struck the loaded sand barge.  The sand barge filled with water and sank.  One of the oil barges sustained damage, but no reports of pollution released.  The Coast Guard dispatched personnel to the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident.

Bonnie G. Selvick sank capsized calumet

The 57 foot long tugboat Bonnie G. Selvick capsized and sank on the Calumet River at Chicago, Illinois.  The tugboat was attempting to make a turn near the 106th street bridge when it rolled over and capsized.  The tug quickly filled and sank in the river. The two crewmen on board were able escape and swim ashore.  No reports of injuries.  The Coast Guard was notified and deployed booms around the vessel to contain any pollution released.

On June 20, 2014, the towboat JR 3 sank on the Mississippi River near Wood River, Illinois.  The vessel quickly sank from an unknown cause.  All three crewman on board were able to abandon ship before the vessel sank.  No reports of injuries.  Local authorities arrived on scene and deployed booms around the vessel.   A short time later fuel and pollution was spotted coming from the sunken JR 3.   Reports state a salvage plan is being worked on to raise the JR 3.  The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
