The 70 meter long freighter Sea Angel sank in rough seas near Kochi, India. The Sea Angel was under tow by the 674 dwt freighter Morning Star heading to a breaking yard to be scrapped. No reports of injuries. The Morning Star was detained at an anchorage near Kochi while authorities conduct an investigation. Reports state the Sea Angel will be removed or scrapped on site where the vessel sank.
The 221 meter long, 41850 dwt container ship Cap Norte caught fire near Mangalore, India. The fire started in one of the cargo containers loaded with chemicals. The vessel contacted authorities in Mumbai for assistance. When a rescue craft reached the scene, the crew had already extinguished the blaze. No reports of injuries or pollution being released.
A ferry with over 350 persons on board capsized and broke-in-two on the Brahmaputra River near Fakiragram, Assam, India. The ferry was sailing along its regular route servicing small villages along the river when it was caught by a storm. The storm quickly overwhelmed the ferry throwing people overboard. Many were caught in the current and drowned. There were no life-rafts or life jackets on board the vessel. Authorities pulled more than 100 bodies from the river with another 100 still reported missing. Reports state there will be an investigation into incident along with inspection of the ferries operating in the area.
