Selvamatha

The 40 meter long cargo vessel Selvamatha sank in the Laccadive Sea off the coast of Kerala, India.  The vessel was proceeding from Androth to Beypore when it sprung a leak. The vessel sent out a distress call which was relayed to the Indian Coast Guard by the tanker Hafina Asia.  The eight crew on the Selvamatha were rescued by a patrol vessel and proceeded to Kochi. No reports of injuries. Reports state the vessel sank due to one of the planks gave way resulting in uncontrolled flooding.

On December 25, the MSV Sarojini was abandoned in the Indian Ocean off Mumbai, India. The dhow was en route to Beypore from Porbandar with 430 tons of soda ash when the vessel suffered a hull failure.  A crack in the hull was near the vessel’s engine room which quickly flooded. The Sarojini sent out a distress call to the Indian Coast Guard which responded to the scene. The eight crew on board the Sarojini were safely rescued. The Coast Guard is monitoring the MSV Sarojini.

A tug was found stranded off the coast of Puducherry, India.  The tug was en route to Chennai from Karaikal with 12 crew when it suffered a mechanical breakdown with its main engine. The vessel went adrift and the crew dropped anchor off the coast. Authorities have arrived on the scene and are monitoring the situation. Reports state the tug was typically employed in assisting vessels entering Chennai harbor and will proceed to there after its engine is repaired. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
