Tide Carrier
On February 22, the 263 meter long barge carrier Tide Carrier became disabled off the coast of Jæren, Norway. The vessel was en route to the Hoylands in a stiff wind when it suffered engine failure. The barge carrier drifted towards shore thus the crew dropped the anchors while they attempted to restart the engine. The anchors held, but the Tide Carrier was just a mere 100 meters off the shore.
The JRCC was alerted and dispatched a Coast Guard vessel, rescue boats and multiple tugs to the scene. As conditions worsen, the JRCC dispatched a helicopter to evacuate four nonessential crew. One crewman sustained an injury and was also airlifted off the Tide Carrier. This left just 15 persons on board the Tide Carrier.
Later reports stated the Tide Carrier was holding steady. Two tugs were able to attach tow lines while two anchors were holding firm. No attempts to pull the Tide Carrier free as seas remain heavy. Reports state towing operations will start on the following day as weather should improve. No reports of damage or pollution released.
