The 200 meter long, 29,277 dwt container ship Kamala caught fire in the East China Sea between Kuchinoshima Island, Japan and Chedju do, Korea. The fire erupted in the cargo hold while the vessel was en route from Surabaya to Ulsan. The vessel requested assistance with the Japanese Coast Guard responding.  Reports state the boxship was carrying 796 containers and the crew  was unable to extinguish the blaze. No injuries to the 23 crew on board.

The 116 meter long, 10292 dwt cargo vessel Marine Diamond ran aground in the port of Nagoya, Japan. The Marine Diamond was departing for Yokkaichi with a cargo of lumber when it struck bottom. The cargo vessel remain aground until the following high tide when a tug was able to refloat it. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 19 ton tugboat Meiyu No. 18 capsized and sank in the Tsugaru Strait off Hokkaido, Japan. The Meiyu No. 18 was proceeding form Hakodate with a pontoon barge loaded with ship parts when the tug lost stability and rolled over. One crewman on board was lucky enough to find a small breathing space in the cabin. He was spent 15 hours trapped until he was later rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard. Three other crewmen  perished with two of their bodies recovered.
