The 229 meter long, 25765 dwt car carrier Asian Empire caught fire in the Pacific Ocean some 740 kilometers south of Shionomisaki, Japan.  The fire started in the vessel’s storeroom and quickly got out of control.  Unable to contain the blaze, the crew sent out a distress call before the 24 crew abandoned ship into the vessel’s two life rafts.  Coast Guard coordinated efforts with the refrigerated vessel Asian Adonis changed course to the scene.  The Adonis was able to recover all the Asian Empire crew from their life rafts. There were no reported injuries.  The Asian Empire crew were taken to Saipan.  Reports state the Asian Empire was still ablaze and adrift.  The Asian Empire was en route to Panama with a cargo of vehicles.

The 70 meter long, 1730 dwt cement carrier Sumise Maru No. 38 collided with the 52 meter long, 696 dwt chemical tanker Kaisei Maru in the Japan Sea off Hyogo, Japan.   The Sumise Maru was proceeding in ballast from Osaka to Ako when it was struck by the Kaisei Maru.  The Sumise Maru filled with with water and  sank 3 hours later.  One crewman on each vessel was injured in the collision.  The Kaisei Maru was able to proceed under its own power to Himeji.  The tanker was carrying 1000 tons of methanol from Osaki-Kamijima to Himeji.

The 130 meter long, 17220 dwt cargo vessel Beagle III collided with the 127 meter long, 9618 dwt container ship Pegasus Prime in Tokyo Bay off Miura Peninsula,  Japan.   The Pegasus Prime’s bow struck into the side of the Beagle III.  The Beagle III quickly filled with water and sank.

Twelve crew members were rescued by a passing passenger vessel. Reports stated 6 crewmen had suffered injuries while launching the vessel’s lifeboat.  One crewman later perished from his injuries.  Eight crewmen were still reported missing.  Authorities have launched a search and rescue effort   No reported injuries on the Pegasus Prime.  The Pegasus Prime sustained significant bow damage with a large fracture on its port side.  The cause of the collision is under investigation.

The Pegasus Prime was en route from Kunsan, South Korea heading to Tokyo while the Beagle III was departing from Yokohama with a cargo of steel coil.
