On October 5, the 290 ton fishing vessel Lurong Yuanyu 378 collided with the 250 meter long, 115459 dwt tanker BrightOil Lucky in the Sea of Japan off Oki Islands, Japan. The tanker struck the Lurong Yuanyu causing the fishing vessel to capsize.

Reports state 13 of the 16 crew on the Lurong Yuanyu 378 were killed in the incident. Four crew had been rescued from the fishing vessel, but one later perished. The cause of the collision has not been disclosed. No reports of injuries or damage to the BrightOil Lucky.

The 180 meter long, 38055 dwt bulk carrier Pacific Cypress caught fire while berthed in Hakodate, Hokkaido. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room and quickly grew out of control. The 17 crew safely evacuated the bulk carrier while local fire brigades fought the blaze. After several hours, the fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire. No reports of injuries. Details to the extent of damage caused by the fire was not reported.

USS Fitzgerald

The 154 meter long,  United States Navy destroyer Fitzgerald collided with the 223 meter long, 39565 dwt container ship ACX Crystal in the early morning hours off Yokosuka, Japan.  The ACX Crystal bow had struck the starboard hull of the Fitzgerald causing significant damage including water ingress in three compartments.  The ACX Crystal sustained scrapes and dents along its bow, but damage is reported to be limited.

The captain of the Fitzgerald sustained injuries and was medivac off the vessel.  Another sailor was evacuated off the vessel by the Japan Coast Guard.  Reports state 7 sailors on the Fitzgerald were reported missing.

The Fitzgerald was able to head back to port under its own power. Escorted by the Japan Coast Guard, the Fitzgerald proceeded with limited propulsion.
