The 465 dwt tanker Keihin Maru No. 8 collided with the 97 meter long, 5025 dwt tanker Eastern Phoenix off Kehin, Kawasaki, Japan. The Eastern Phoenix struck the port hull of the Keihin Maru No. 8 resulting in a hull breach. The Keihin Maru No. 8 suffered water ingress and released some of its cargo of fuel oil into the sea. The three crew on board were later rescued. No reports of injuries. The Eastern Phoenix only sustained minor damage. Reports state the Keihin Maru No.8 was in a flooded condition, but remains afloat. Salvage operations were reported to have started.

The 56 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Shoyo Maru allided with the moored 235 meter long, 91,569 dwt bulk carrier Dyna Camellia near the port of Kure, Hiroshima, Japan. The ferry was headed to Matsuyama with 62 passengers when it had suffered a power blackout and lost control before striking the Dyna Camellia moored at a nearby quay. Three passengers were slightly injured, but no damage reported. Reports state the Shoyo Maru cancelled its voyage and returned to Kure.

On July 15, the 600 dwt cargo vessel Yamato Maru No. 8 collided with the 1630 dwt cargo vessel Hosho Maru off Ueshima Island in the Harima-nada Sea, Japan. The Yamato Maru No. 8 was headed to Osaka from Ako with 1300 tons of crushed stone when it was struck by the Hosho Maru. The Yamato Maru No. 8 capsized and sank. One crew was injured and two others perished on the Yamato Maru No. 8 while the five crew of the Hosho Maru were unhurt. The Hosho Maru was able to proceed The cause of the incident is under investigation by the Japan Coast Guard.
