Antarctic Fire
The 51 meter long fishing vessel Jung Woo 2 caught fire in the Ross Sea off Antarctica. The fire started in the vessel’s crew quarters and spread to other portions of the vessel. The crew issued a distress call which was received by the fishing vessel Hong Jin 707. The Hong Jin 707 evacuated the crew who were forced into a lifeboat as the fire burned out of control. The Hong Jin 707 proceeded on to meet with the research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer which has medical facilities on board. Of the 40 crew on board the Jung Woo 2, three crew men died in the fire with another seven suffered burn injuries. The vessel remains on fire and was last reported to be sinking.
