Pan Spirit

The 190 meter long, 56891 dwt bulk carrier Pan Spirit ran aground at Mombasa, Kenya.  The Pan Spirit had arrived from a voyage from Al Jubail and was maneuvering to berth in Mombasa when it ran aground. The bulk carrier remain stuck for several hours until it could be refloated later the same day.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

On June 20, the 229 meter long, 84040 dwt tanker Theresa Arctic ran aground off Kilifi, Kenya. The Theresa Arctic was headed to Mombasa with 27,500 tons of vegetable oil from Port Klang, Malaysia when it ran up on a reef.  The crew requested assistance and a tug was dispatched to the scene. The tanker could not be refloated, but the tug was able to keep the Theresa Arctic from being pushed higher onto the reef by strong winds. Additional tugs were dispatched and were monitoring the situation.

The tanker was reported to be firmly aground, but no reports of water ingress or pollution released. A vessel has been dispatched from Beira, Mozambique to the site to help with lightering some of the cargo.

 

 

Ferry Allision

Ferry Allision

The 75 meter long ferry Kwale allided with a moored vessel on the Likoni Channel, Kenya.   The ferry was about to berth when the crew lost control of the vessel.   The Kwale drifted down the channel striking the 119 meter long freighter Sea Wind and just missed a dredger working in the channel.  The Kwale suffered damage to its railings and its life rafts were destroyed.   Passengers on board were shaken by the incident and rushed to leave the vessel when it reached shore.   Reports state several passengers were injured in the stampede.   No reports of there was damage on the Sea Wind.   No reports of pollution being released.
