On January 15, the 108 meter long, 7734 dwt cargo vessel Südkap became disabled in Kiel Canal at Kiel, Germany. The Südkap was headed to Beira from St. Petersburg when it suffered a power failure when the main engine failed. The vessel remained in Kiel for several hours until the crew was able to complete repairs and continued on its voyage. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 118 meter long, 7802 dwt cargo vessel Thorco Hilde became disabled while entering Holtenau Locks of the Kiel Canal. The Thorco Hilde was headed from Gdansk when it suffered engine failure entering the locks. The pilot alerted the lock personnel who were able secure the cargo vessel before it struck the lock gate. The crew was able to restart the engine and proceeded out the lock a short time later. Authorities detained the Thorco Hilde for a few hours while doing an investigation into the incident. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 88 meter long, 2800 dwt cargo vessel Daan allided with the lock gate while exiting the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel, Germany. The Daan was proceeding through the lock when it suffered engine failure and could not reverse before it struck the lock gate. The Daan sustained bow damage with the bulwark partially torn off while the lock gate was left deformed. No reports of pollution released. The Daan was reported moored at Brunsbüttel.  On December 3, the Daan lost a crewman while en route to St. Malo from Szczecin. The vessel had a hatch strike a crewman standing on deck who later died from the injury.
