Collisions on Kiel Canal

The 72 meter long, 1816 dwt freighter Perseus collided with the 33 meter long, 366 gt tug Westsund on the Kiel Canal.  The Perseus was en route to Hamburg from Oxelosund in the Kiel Canal when a barge being towed by the tugs Westsund and Vorwarts had swung perpendicular to the fairway.  The freighter attempted to avoid the barge, but struck the port side of the Westsund.  The barge continued forward and struck the stern of the Westsund.  Both the Perseus and Westsund suffered some hull damage.  No reports of injuries.  The barge was berthed at Rendsburg for repairs.  The Perseus proceeded to Brunsbüttel where it also entered a yard for repairs.

Transwood

The 179 meter long, 18855 dwt freighter Transwood went aground on the Kiel Canal near Rendsburg, Germany.  The vessel was proceeding westbound when it grounded on to an embankment.   A tug was requested and was able to refloat the Transwood later the same day.   The vessels proceeded to Brunsbüttel where it was inspected.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  Reports state the grounding was due to a navigation mistake caused by limited visibility  at the time.

Fjordstraum

The 100 meter long, 5846 dwt tanker Fjordstraum allided with pilings on the Kiel Canal near Kudensee, Germany.  The Fjordstraum was attempting to moor when it struck the pilings.   The Fjordstraum was undamaged, but the pilings were severely damaged.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The Fjordstraum was able to proceed and locked through the canal  later the same day.
