Collision off Holtenau

Collision off Holtenau

The 81 meter long, 2300 dwt freighter Kovera collided with the 82 meter long, 2019 dwt freighter Ida in dense fog off Holtenau, Germany.  Both vessels were approaching the locks to the Kiel Canal when the Kovera struck the Ida.   Both vessels sustained significant damage.  The Ida proceeded to Heikendorf for anchorage while the Kovera remained at Holtenau for inspection.  Both vessels are expected to make repairs at the shipyard in Kiel.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The water police are conducting an investigation.  The exact cause of the collision was not reported.

Kiel Canal Allision

The 90 meter long, 4507 dwt freighter Storoe allided with the embankment on the Kiel Canal between Breiholz and Meckelmoor.  The Storoe had lost steering when its rudder failed when it hit the southern embankment.  The freighter was able to refloat itself and proceed to Brunsbuettel.   An inspection was conducted and the Storoe was allowed to continue on its voyage.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Pollux Allision

Pollux Allision

The 90 meter long freighter Pollux struck the inner gate at the Norther Lock of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbuettel, Germany.   The lock suffered significant damage and was taken out of service for several hours for repairs.  The gate suffered two large dents underwater while the lighting above was demolished.  The bow of the Pollux was dented.  The Pollux was detained in Brunsbuettel until it could be surveyed and inspected.   Authorities has stated that the Pollux had entered the lock at a too high rate of speed.  There were no injuries or pollution released.  The Pollux was able to continue on its voyage to Kolding, Denmark.
